Chestnut Hill College will be hosting a free psychology panel discussion on the highs and lows of life in a stepfamily on Friday, May 3 from 7 - 8:30 p.m. at the college’s SugarLoaf Campus. Attendees will hear from four of the field’s foremost experts as they share what they have learned about helping stepfamily members face some of the common – and not so common – challenges associated with being part of a “blended family.” Following the discussion, the audience will also have the opportunity to participate in a Q&A session with the experts. The four stepfamily experts presenting at the event are:
• Scott Browning, Ph.D.,
a professor of psychology at Chestnut Hill College
• Patricia Papernow, Ed.D.,
the author of “Surviving and Thriving in Stepfamily Relationships: What
Works and What Doesn’t”
• Brad van Eeden-Moorefield, Ph.D.,
an associate professor in the department of family and child studies and
director of the Ph.D. program in family studies at Montclair State
University
• Francesca Adler-Baeder, Ph.D.,
a professor in human development and family studies at Auburn University
and the founder of the National Stepfamily Resource Center
These four experts have a combined 11 decades of experience as therapists, family life educators, and researchers working with stepfamilies.
The college will also hold a two-day workshop at SugarLoaf on Friday, May 3, and Saturday, May 4, titled “Understanding and Treating Stepfamilies.” The college has partnered with the National Stepfamily Resource Center and the Philadelphia Association of Couple and Family Psychology to bring together the four aforementioned experts to teach therapists how to effectively treat stepfamilies.
By connecting research, prevention, and clinical theory, the workshop will provide attendees with the tools present in the evidence-based practices that are used to treat this challenging clinical population. Along with sophisticated and current lectures, this workshop will also feature a created stepfamily so that live psychotherapy can be demonstrated by Papernow and Browning.
The price of registration for “Understanding and Treating Stepfamilies” is $300. It includes two days of training, evening community presentation, and both lunch and afternoon snacks.
