A new apartment building is headed to 32nd and Race Streets near Drexel University after the plan was approved by the Zoning Board of Adjustment on Wednesday.
The 16-story tower, designed by Philly-based architects Erdy McHenry, will include 164 apartment units, an underground parking lot, and a childcare center that will serve around 150 children,
PlanPhilly reports. The project also will twelve 3-story townhomes to serve as a buffer between the new tower and the Powelton Village neighborhood.
The properties are being developed by Radnor Property Group after Drexel bought and assembled them over the past few years. A community garden will be located to the west of the tower and a railyard will be on the east.
According to an attorney representing the developers, the new apartments are intended for those who work for the surrounding universities and institutions and will not be available to undergraduates.
Construction on the project is expected to take 18 months, with a projected opening in spring 2017.
