Life is like a box of chocolates ...

Tuesday is National Milk Chocolate Day, a day to celebrate a treat that is loved by many. In an ode to the delicious sweet, here are seven area candy shops with homemade milk chocolates.

Shane Confectionary

Shane Confectionary on Market Street is the oldest continuously operated candy shop in America. The Philadelphia landmark has been around since 1863.

Shane has an entire floor devoted to hand-dipping chocolates of all varieties. 

Mueller Chocolate Company

Glenn and Theresa Mueller started Chocolate By Mueller in 1980. The couple has had seven different stores before settling in at the Reading Terminal Market in 1995. Choose from chocolates to fudge to other chocolate-covered favorites.

Mueller Chocolate Company recently opened a new location on Huntingdon Pike in Rockledge, Montgomery County.

Lore's Chocolates

Lore's Chocolates is a gourmet chocolate retailer and manufacturer located on South Seventh Street in historic Philadelphia. The shop specializes in chocolate gifts, custom chocolate molds, holiday gifts and even chocolate parties.

Asher's Chocolates

Asher's Chocolates in Souderton, Montgomery County, has been making fine chocolate and other classic confections since 1892. The company claims to have one of the largest lines of sugar-free chocolates in the country. Kosher treats are also available.

Asher's is celebrating National Milk Chocolate day by offering 10 percent off all orders of $50 or more.

Bridge Street Chocolates

Bridge Street Chocolates in Phoenixville, Chester County, was recently named "Best of the Main Line Chocolatier." Enjoy truffles, fudge, marshmallows and other chocolate-covered goodness.

Sweet Ashley's Chocolate on Main Street in Royersford, Montgomery County, offers something for nearly every chocolate craving. From chocolate covered Swedish Fish and chocolate covered cashews to peanut butter Oreos and chocolate covered pretzels, you're sure to find something you'll enjoy.

The Hershey Company

A compilation of local iconic chocolate shops wouldn't be complete without a nod to The Hershey Company, the largest producer of quality chocolate in North America, based right in Pennsylvania.

At Hershey Park in Hershey, Pennsylvania, guests can make their own chocolate in a chocolate lab inspired by Milton Hershey's own candy-making methods.
