The 64th annual Christmas Day crossing will kick off at noon on Dec. 25. More than 200 re-enactors dressed in Continental military dress, with one playing the role of George Washington, will row across the Delaware River in replicas of the Durham boats used in 1776.
The event is a Bucks County tradition, taking place at Washington Crossing Historic Park.
On the night of Dec. 25, 1776, Gen. Washington and a small army of about 2,400 men crossed the Delaware River in Bucks County. The site of the crossing is now a National Historic Landmark.
Across the Delaware River, Washington's army attacked Hessian troops working for the British. Their act of bravery helped turn the tide in the Revolutionary War.
The actual re-enactment will take place at 1 p.m., but attendees are encouraged to come early to secure a spot to watch and to stay after for speeches and commemorative activities. The event is free to attend.
