Nearby homes and businesses were evacuated after a four-alarm fire broke out at a Payless shoe store in Upper Darby Monday.
6 ABC reports that the fire began around 5:45 p.m. at the store in the shopping center located at the corner of Chestnut and South 69th streets.
The roof collapsed as firefighters and emergency crews worked to put out the blaze.
The Upper Darby Police Department tweeted a photo of the fire, asking drivers to avoid the area.
More than 25 nearby homes were evacuated as well. One firefighter on the scene was transported from the area for heat exhaustion, according to Sharrie Williams of 6 ABC.
Seven stores have been affected due to heat, smoke, or water damage. Firefighters were able to get the fire under control just before 9:00 p.m., with one engine remaining on scene to monitor the situation.
The cause of the fire remains unknown.
