Cardone Industries, an auto parts remanufacturer, will lay off 1,366 workers from its Northeast Philadelphia plant as it moves its brakes division to Mexico, reports Philadelphia Magazine.
The layoffs affect workers at the company's facilities at 5501 Whitaker Ave. and 5670 Rising Sun Ave. Around 20 to 30 people will be let go each month until 2018.
Around 1,000 jobs will stay in Philadelphia and a spokesperson told Philly Mag that Cardone "will always be headquartered in Philadelphia."
The spokesperson, Kevin Feeley, also said the company is investing in more high-tech operations and will eventually hire "several hundred" people for the electronics division.
Feeley said that the division is moving to Matamoros in northern Mexico to save on labor costs.
Laid-off workers will get severance pay, help finding new employment and access to job-training programs.
