A shooting at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Ariz., left one person dead and three others injured Friday morning, the school announced in an online alert.
The incident occurred in a parking lot adjacent to Mountain View Hall on the northeast end of the Flagstaff Campus. The first call of shots fired came in at 1:20 a.m. PDT. Campus was not put on lockdown.
The school said the shooter, identified as 18-year-old Steven Jones, a freshman at the university, is in custody.
Jones brandished a handgun during a confrontation with several male students, campus police chief Gregory Fowler said. The three injured students suffered multiple gunshot wounds and were being treated at Flagstaff Medical Center, Fowler said. Their conditions were not disclosed.
Jones did not try to run, was taken into custody by university police and is cooperating with police, Fowler said.
Some Delta Chi fraternity members were involved in the shooting, the Washington Post and other media reported.
The shooting comes just one week after a gunman opened fire on an Oregon college campus, killing nine before taking his own life. The incident occurred hours before President Barack Obama was scheduled to visit Roseburg, Oregon to meet privately with the families of those killed.
