Two people are dead after being struck by a taxi in Center City early Monday morning, 6ABC reports.
The incident happened just before 4:30 a.m. on the 100 block of Broad Street near Arch. The impact threw both victims 100 feet from the cab.
One victim, a 24-year-old woman, was pronounced dead at the scene. The other, a 25-year-old man, was pronounced dead a short time later at the hospital.
6ABC reports the two, both from the Philadelphia area, were in town for the Made In America festival.
The 41-year-old taxi driver, who remained on the scene, was also taken to the hospital for treatment. The driver was said to have chest pains.
"The good thing here - he didn't leave the scene," Philadelphia Police Lieutenant Greg Brown told 6ABC. "He did the right thing and didn't make it an apparent crime by not leaving the scene. He stayed there."
According to a witness, the taxi driver was going about 50 miles per hour (mph), 25 mph over the speed limit.
The crash remains under investigation.
