Recipe: A Maca-rita from Sprig + Spirit

Libations Recipes
Maca Rita Tenaya Darlington/Sprig + Spirit

Learn how to make this healthful take on the margarita.

This superfood margarita contains a serving of Andean maca powder, otherwise known as “Peruvian ginseng.” Related to the radish, this energy-boosting root tastes malty and earthy, making it a good match for citrus and smoky mezcal. You can also make this drink with freshly squeezed orange juice in place of lime. Look for organic raw maca powder online or in the supplements aisle of most groceries.

You will need:
1 teaspoon raw honey
1 teaspoon maca powder
1 ounce freshly squeezed lime juice
1-1/2 ounces tequila
1/2 ounce Cointreau
1/4 ounce mezcal, to float
Half a lime wheel, for garnish

In a cocktail shaker, mash honey, maca, and lime juice together with the back of a spoon to make a paste (you can also use a mortar and pestle to integrate the maca into the honey quickly and easily). Add tequila and Cointreau, and shake with ice. Strain into a chilled rocks glass filled with ice. Add mezcal and garnish with lime wheel.
