Reading police K-9 Cody has been released from the hospital following a serious fall in the line of duty, the City of Reading Police Department announced Sunday.

Officials said the dog will have at least two weeks worth of rest before returning to the force. He also has a couple of follow-up visits scheduled this week.

While conducting a building search in Reading Friday night, Cody fell about 20 feet and was seriously injured with suspected internal bleeding.

The three-year-old Belgian Malinois dog was flown by medevac helicopter to the University of Pennsylvania's veterinary hospital, the first such flight and transport ever done, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

Reading police had responded to Southwest Middle School at about 8:15 p.m. for a report that the school was unsecure. The K-9 unit was called to assist in the search. No one was found inside the building.

Cody began service July 7, 2014.
