Former Philadelphia police Commissioner John Timoney has died, the department announced Wednesday. He was 68.
Timoney served as commissioner from 1998-2001. Current Commissioner Richard Ross extended his condolences to Timoney's family in a social media post.

Timoney also served as Miami's police chief from 2003-2010. He had stage 4 lung cancer at the time of his death, according to CBS Miami.
Timoney's friend and former Philadelphia police Officer Mike Chitwood Jr. told the Inquirer his former colleague had been fighting cancer since June.
