Fishtown residents vote to approve mixed-use development on Frankford Avenue

Fishtown residents and business owners voted 71-68 at a community meeting on Thursday to approve a tightly contested mixed-use development on Frankford Avenue.


The condo project, led by Trinity Realty Companies, provoked heated debate because it calls for the consolidation of 11 lots that would result in the removal of a community garden and garages operated by Penn Treaty Metals, according to Naked Philly.

As it's currently drawn up, the proposed building at 1405 Frankford Ave. would include 30 residential units and 16 parking spaces with room for commercial tenants. The primary version of the proposal has the building at 50 feet in height, but the developers also have noted an option to construct a smaller complex with an additional two units and no parking by right. 

Local residents and business owners voiced their opinions, concerns and impressions on the project at the meeting and in the neighborhood's online message board. Some objected to losing the community garden, others questioned the limited parking and many wondered how construction would impact conditions on Frankford Avenue.

To move forward, the project will need to obtain approval from the Zoning Board of Adjustment.
