Over the last 10 years, the Philadelphia Eagles have selected an inordinately high number of players (59, to be exact) on Day 3 (rounds four through seven) of the NFL Draft. Only one, center Jason Kelce, has made a Pro Bowl.
Granted, Pro Bowls aren't exactly as stellar measure, but the following chart shows the number of Pro Bowl players drafted by each team on Day 3 in the last 10 years:
Team | Total Pro Bowls | Players |
Seahawks | 10 | Richard Sherman (4), K.J. Wright, Kam Chancellor (4), Justin Forsett (1) |

Bengals | 6 | Geno Atkins (5), Kevin Huber (1) |
Saints | 5 | Thomas Morstead (1), Carl Nicks (2), Jermon Bushrod (2) |
Steelers | 5 | Antonio Brown (5) |
Dolphins | 4 | Jay Ajayi (1), Reshad Jones (1), Paul Soliai (1), Brandon Fields (1) |
Ravens | 4 | Kyle Juszczyk (1), Tyrod Taylor (1), Cedric Peerman (1), Le'Ron McClain (1) |
Bears | 4 | Jordan Howard (1), Henry Melton (1), Johnny Knox (1), Corey Graham (1) |
Cowboys | 3 | Dak Prescott (1), Dwayne Harris (1), Nick Folk (1) |
Redskins | 3 | Kirk Cousins (1), Alfred Morris (2), |
Vikings | 3 | Blair Walsh (1), Everson Griffen (2) |
Panthers | 3 | Josh Norman (1), Greg Hardy (1), Gary Barnidge (1) |
Cardinals | 3 | Justin Bethel (3) |
Eagles | 2 | Jason Kelce (2) |
Giants | 2 | Zak DeOssie (2) |
Falcons | 2 | Devonta Freeman (2) |
49ers | 2 | Dashon Goldson (2) |
Colts | 2 | Pat McAfee (2) |
Titans | 2 | Alterraun Verner (1), Marc Mariani (1) |
Chiefs | 2 | Tyreek Hill (1), D.J. Alexander (1) |
Broncos | 2 | Julius Thomas (2) |
Lions | 1 | Jerome Felton (1) |
Browns | 1 | Jordan Cameron (1) |
Texans | 1 | Glover Quin (1) |
Raiders | 1 | Latavius Murray (1) |
Chargers | 1 | Darrell Stuckey (1) |
Buccaneers | 0 | N/A |
Rams | 0 | N/A |
Bills | 0 | N/A |
Jets | 0 | N/A |
Jaguars | 0 | N/A |
The big winners above, of course, are the Seahawks, who found two star defensive backs. The Packers found most of their offensive line late in the draft. And then you have stud players like Antonio Brown, Josh Norman, Devonta Freeman, Dak Prescott, Tyreek Hill, and Geno Atkins, who were all big-time Day 3 diamonds in the rough.
Conversely, if you look at the teams that have drafted no Pro Bowl players in rounds four through seven over the last 10 years, here are their records over that span:
Team | W | L | T |
Jets | 74 | 86 | 0 |
Bills | 66 | 94 | 0 |
Buccaneers | 63 | 97 | 0 |
Jaguars | 53 | 107 | 0 |
Rams | 46 | 113 | 1 |
TOTAL | 302 | 497 | 1 |
The Eagles have not been able to find enough firepower in the late rounds. If you go back an additional 10 years, you can add Trent Cole (2 Pro Bowls) and Ike Reese (1) to the Eagles' list, bringing their meager total to five.
In the 2017 draft, the Eagles currently have five picks: two fours, a five, a six, and a seven. A season ago, in an elevated role with the Chicago Bears, Eagles personnel chief Joe Douglas and his staff found RB Jordan Howard in the fifth round. Howard went on to rush for over 1300 yards on his way to the Pro Bowl as a rookie.
If the Eagles are going to be Super Bowl contenders anytime soon, it would help enormously to find some kind of gem late in the draft for a change.
