An estimated 50,000 people are expected to flock to Philadelphia next week for the Democratic National Convention, and while they’re here, they’re going to have to eat.
That’s not an issue, as Philly has a surplus of food options to please the political people’s palates. (Take, for example, Pat's King of Steaks' Hillary and Bernie sandwiches.)
The issue is waste, as in all of the food from convention events that will be left uneaten and presumably thrown away.
That’s where Food Connect comes in – it’s a new app developed locally and intentionally right in time for the DNC that connects restaurants, vendors and caterers with Philadelphia food banks, pantries and similar food-serving organizations that assist the city’s in-need populations.
One of the main draws of the app is that it not only conveniently links food suppliers and service organizations, but it also hooks the two up with a volunteer who is willing to pick up and deliver the food, so there’s really no excuse to not use it.
Even better, the app will remain available after the convention as a benefit to the city in the days and years to come. Anyone can download and use it.
