Ben Simmons will undergo surgery on his right foot in the next week, according to a report by ESPN’s Marc Stein. The report also included information that Simmons is expected to miss about three months, with a return date in either December or January.
During the team’s final training camp practice at Stockton University on Friday, Simmons rolled his ankle landing on the foot of teammate Shawn Long. After receiving an X-ray and MRI on his foot, it was concluded that he fractured of the fifth metatarsal bone of his right foot.
All in all, this isn’t a terrible outcome for the top overall pick after hearing the initial news of the fracture. The Sixers, with a new front office in place, will still proceed with caution like Bryan Colangelo’s predecessor Sam Hinkie always did. Simmons won’t be rushed back, but it also appears as if this injury isn’t a season-ender like the Sixers have seen the past three years with Joel Embiid (twice) and Nerlens Noel.
It also appears that the weight gain Simmons talked about at media day, which was overblown earlier in the week, didn’t play a factor in injuring his foot. PhillyVoice will be at Sixers practice on Sunday morning, where we should learn more about Simmons’ injury and rehab.
